Critically injured New York driver charged in head-on crash

Authorities have identified the female driver who they say caused a head-on collision on Route 370 in Lysander. The 30-year-old Baldwinsville woman was critically injured in the crash, and she was hospitalized at Upstate University Hospital in intensive care after being extricated from the wreckage. Sheriff deputies say she was driving drunk at the time, and they have charged her with DWI, driving without a license and failing to stay in her lane.

According to Onondaga County sheriff deputies, the accident happened on the evening of Dec. 8 on Route 370. Deputies say the woman was traveling north in a 2001 Chevrolet Impala when she crossed into southbound traffic and crashed head-on into a 2014 Dodge Caravan. The 49-year-old female driver of that vehicle received treatment for injuries she suffered in the crash at Upstate University Hospital. Her male passenger was hospitalized and is in stable condition.

The airbags of both vehicles deployed, and all three occupants were restrained with seat belts, according to officers. Volunteer firefighters from three jurisdictions along with the Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps responded to the accident scene. Route 370, which was closed following the accident, reopened three hours later.

The aftermath of a serious head-on collision can seriously impact an injured individual's quality of life. For example, when the injuries suffered result in permanent disabilities, survivors of these life-changing events may no longer be able to live independently or provide for themselves economically.

The medical costs, rehabilitation fees and other expenses stemming from the wreck may be recovered from those at fault for the damages. Injured accident victims might choose to pursue compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
