Drunk driving is always a serious issue, because it often results in an automobile accident, some of which are fatal. The magnitude of the situation seems to be even more pronounced when the drunk driver is said to be a teenager.
According to a recent report, an 18-year-old teenager, reported to be driving while intoxicated, was charged with multiple counts. Other Ramapo drivers reported a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Interstate 87 around 1:45 in the morning, after which it sideswiped a delivery truck. The teenage driver has been charged by New York State Police for driving the wrong way on Interstate 87 and DWI. The driver of the delivery truck was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment to the shoulder and neck areas.
The teenage driver, who was said to be uncooperative, reportedly had a blood alcohol level significantly above the legal limit. In addition to reckless endangerment, he was charged with disorderly conduct and, at last report, was awaiting arraignment. If there is any good news in this report, it would have to be that the driver of the delivery truck was not killed in the accident, and the teenage driver apparently escaped with no injuries.
While news reports like this are sad to hear, they call attention to the fact that automobile accidents are a part of life. The only way to completely avoid them would be to never leave one's home. It is possible, though, to find yourself in a situation where you are the one cited for a traffic violation, a drunk driving, or some other criminal offense. An attorney who handles DUI cases may be able to help mount a defense against such charges and defend them in court.
