Two men arrested for alleged identity fraud scheme

If you have been charged with a fraud-related crime and are convicted, the consequences you face will directly correspond with the severity of the crime committed. Two men from the Bronx may be hit with significant penalties, as they are facing identity theft charges in the first degree after allegedly using personal information to steal high-end vehicles from various New York car dealerships.

Each man reportedly played different roles in the elaborate scheme. One of the men was allegedly responsible for providing others in the scheme with forged driver's licenses and identifying information from the alleged victims (e.g. social security numbers). He is also accused of driving the other man and other accomplices into the dealerships to run the scheme. The other man reportedly went into the dealerships and acted as if he was a legitimate buyer who wanted financing for expensive vehicles. In one such incident, the man is accused of using another's identity to secure a financing deal for a vehicle worth over $86,000, and then driving it off the lot without paying.

Authorities believe the identity theft fraud scheme was run at least five times with different accomplices and different alleged victims' identities for each purchase. The men are accused of stealing between $500,000 and $1 million worth of items. Authorities believe that the men planned to export the vehicles out of the country for resale.

Identity theft is a serious crime and, when a conviction is obtained, it can result in extended periods of jail time. However, defense attorneys may be able to help avoid these harsh penalties, even in the most serious cases. An attorney can work to hammer out a plea deal with prosecutors to reduce the charges one faces, which could minimize the penalties imposed. If this is not an option, then a strong criminal defense attorney can aggressively litigate in court in hopes of obtaining an acquittal. For more information about the legal options available to an individual given a specific set of circumstances, individuals should consider speaking to a criminal defense attorney.
