NYC "ex-madam" candidate charged for allegedly selling drugs

A self-described "ex-madam," a candidate for New York City comptroller has been charged with illegally distributing prescription drugs. The 38-year-old was charged on Aug. 19 with selling Adderall, Xanax and other drugs. She's is also facing charges of orchestrating the sale of approximately 180 oxycodone pills for cash. She has posted bail in the amount of $100,000 and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 5. According to authorities, she will be under strict pre-trial supervision.

She is charged with four counts of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute a controlled substance and faces up to 20 years in prison for each count. Authorities have also reported that she claims to have supplied fellow candidate Eliot Spitzer with escorts several years ago.

According to the FBI, the agency originated a three-month sting operation earlier this year. During the sting, the candidate is alleged to have sold pills on three separate occasions to an undercover agent who she believed to be a drug dealer.

According to the Manhattan U.S. Attorney, prescription drug abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the United Sates. It results in more fatalities from overdose than heroin and cocaine combined. He stated that his office has a zero tolerance policy toward anyone who helps to promote the abuse at any level.

New York authorities take prescription drug abuse very seriously. If convicted of drug charges, a person a may face serious consequences such as a long prison sentence or hefty fine. In such a case, a New York criminal defense attorney may be able to help by making certain that law enforcement officers didn't violate the rights of the accused. For instance, if entrapment or an illegal search was used, grounds may exist to have the case dismissed.
